Newsletter October 2023

Distinguished Delegates,

We are delighted to be seeing so many new faces in our sessions as well as many of our wonderful veterans!

In this newsletter we will look back on the first few weeks of the semester as well as give an outlook on upcoming events, present some exciting new merch and get an update from the new UNYA President.

First Topic Block

The fourth and final session of our first topic block has come to a close, with delegates working hard to represent their countries and positions. It was a very lively debate and I’d like to thank all the delegates who attended for their contributions. Speeches and resolutions referenced many of the different positive aspects of Nuclear Energy and nuanced problems which still require solving. Additionally, multiple moderated caucuses were held in order to iron out specific details all so that in the end there could be a satisfactory consensus for all. The fantastic resolution which was passed truly shows the depth of expertise with which our delegates approached this topic. Also, a big congratulations to our first delegate of the topic block, Humberto Tomé, for all the hard work they put in.

Eli Kupiec - Head of Operations

Scavenger Hunt

We had our annual Scavenger Hunt on the 10th of October where 5 teams competed against each other for the chance to win prizes. The city centre served as the backdrop for this exciting adventure, and the teams explored various landmarks and hidden gems as they solved clues and completed tasks.

Congratulations to Team Head of Cycl-operations for taking home the first prize in the Scavenger Hunt! They showed great teamwork and determination throughout the event. It was a thrilling competition with all the teams showcasing their problem-solving skills and creativity.
I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in the Scavenger Hunt. Your enthusiasm and energy made the event truly special. It was incredible to see how each team approached the challenges with their unique strategies and ideas.

At the end of the Scavenger Hunt, we all gathered at El Lokal to share our experiences and enjoy some well-deserved drinks and conversations.
I would like to give a special shoutout to Tara and Eli for their exceptional efforts in organizing this event. Their dedication and attention to detail ensured that everything ran smoothly and that everyone had a memorable experience.
Thank you to everyone who participated and made this event a success.

Francesca Peacey - Head of Events

A word from the UNYA President

“Bringing Swiss Youth closer to the United Nations”

As our slogan says, our goal since 2007 has been to bring the youth of Switzerland closer to the United Nations. Since then UNYA encompasses all Model United Nations Associations of Switzerland in all three language regions with a total of about 400 people.

Therefore, for several years UNYA has been organising and participating in UN-related events, such as UN Day, events of the Swiss foreign affairs department and also the UNYA Annual Conference.

The United Nations Youth Association Switzerland is happy to announce that the annual UNYA Conference will take place between the 11th and the 12th of November in Bern, co-hosted with MUN Bern.
The topic of the conference being the Myanmar Climate Crisis offers an interesting opportunity to prove your problem solving skills when faced with an urgent need for action in the form of a simulated national disaster occuring.

What makes the UNYA Conference unique is that it is made up of two committees. The first one being the Security Council which will be tasked with the challenge of finding a resolution to the regional conflict as well as the secondary goal of ensuring humanitarian relief to the affected region. The second committee will be a small Crisis Committee made up of NGOs and press which will focus on handling the situation on the ground and providing humanitarian relief directly. The two committees will also have the chance to interact. So no matter what type of MUN you prefer, the UNYA Conference provides you with the chance to give it your all, try out new things and grow as a MUN delegate!

Make use of this opportunity to meet MUNers from all over Switzerland and sign up to become a delegate at the UNYA Crisis Conference here: https://unya.ch/home/events/conference/.

Nicolas Cavadini - UNYA President

We look forward to many more fruitful debates and exciting events to come! Stay tuned!
