Newsletter September 2023

Distinguished Delegates,

We are delighted to be sending you the first newsletter of the academic year and hope you all have a great start to the fall semester!
Read on for a greeting from our new President Melkon, a recap of our summer barbecue as well as information on upcoming events and the first topic block.

A Greeting from our President

After a pleasant yet busy summer our new board members have adjusted to their new positions and are ready for the start of the semester. This academic year will be one filled with interesting topics in our weekly sessions, exciting events and new destinations for our upcoming conferences. Our new head of operations Eli, has been eagerly preparing for our upcoming rookie session whilst also finalizing our first topic block. Our head of Events has also been planning our yearly scavenger hunt, allowing for our veteran members and new members to get to know each other, I personally hope to win this year.

Last but not least, we’d like to especially thank our former board members August, Darya, Aurora, Deniz, Humberto, Sebastian and Tajana for their excellent work last year and helping our new board members with their transitions.

Melkon Yengibaryan - President

Summer Barbecue Recap

Back in July we got together for the first event with our new board!

On the beautiful summer evening of July 31st we met up for our annual summer barbecue. This time the event was held by the lake instead of the VSUZH garden and we were delighted to welcome so many of our members in a new location! Our Head of Events, Francesca, made sure that everyone had cool drinks while waiting for their food on the grill.

We got very lucky with the weather and were able chat, laugh, eat, drink and even participate in tarot readings, courtesy of our Vice President Ben, until late into the night. It was truly a wonderful first social event for our board.

Thank you to everyone for joining us, we had a great time!

Veterans Event

A warm welcome back Veterans! Francesca, our Head of Events, has planned a wonderful evening to allow you to catch up after the long summer break and get back into the spirit of MUN. Join us on Wednesday, 27 September at 18:30 in KOL-G-221 to get information about all upcoming MUN activities. Later in the evening we will let the get-together come to an end at a bar.

You will be able to sign up through the link sent in the group chat or through the linktree in our Instagram bio.

We are looking forward to seeing you again and hearing about what you have been up to during the summer!

Rookie Session

Do you have friends that are interested in trying out MUN for themselves? Then let them know about our Rookie Session on Thursday, 28 September at 18:30 in KOL-F-101!

This is the perfect opportunity to gain an insight into our association and our activities. After a brief presentation by our board, a short mock debate involving more seasoned members of the association as well as some brave rookies will give a taste of our weekly sessions. To end the night we will head to a bar to hold our first "beer delegation" of the semester. Don't miss out on this opportunity to get to know your new board and ask all the questions you have about MUN!

We are excited to get to know many potential new members!

First Topic Block

MUN Season is back upon us! Beginning Wednesday the 4th of October, we will be back to discussing interesting and relevant topics, starting with our first topic block: “Combating Climate Change with Nuclear Energy”. We will be handling this issue within the United Nations General Assembly, in hopes of being able to discuss the environmental and economic aspects of nuclear power.

This is a very prominent topic nowadays and we hope that this will facilitate the flow of debate. Many already have some sort of opinion on the issue, which should make research – even if supporting an opposing one – easier. Being the first sessions of the semester, we hope that this will lead to varied and interesting discussion points being brought to attention.

I’m very excited to hear all of the great speeches to come and hope that we can find a resolution which benefits all parties involved.

Eli Kupiec - Head of Operations

We wish you successful start to the new semester and look forward to welcoming you all back. Stay tuned!

See you soon,
Your Board

Melkon, Ben, Mila, Eli, Kai, Francesca, Tara and Anna
