Newsletter October 2022

Distinguished Delegates,

We are over the moon to spot so many new, but also familiar faces in our weekly sessions!

After such a triumphant start to the new semester, we want to take a look back at the activities of our association over the past few weeks.

First Topic Block

The progress and participation in the first topic block of this semester, “The Decriminalisation of Illicit Drugs”, has exceeded my expectations. Our delegates have been very vocal in expressing their nation’s positions, and not yielding to opposition. As of the third weekly session, we have introduced two working papers with completely different focuses, yet strong in their own rights.

In addition to the weekly sessions, we have held two rookie workshops and a workshop on conferences. I am personally very proud of the first rookie workshop where we implemented a short simulation of what a weekly session looks like, to ensure that new members aren’t directly thrown into the deep end. I was pleased to see that with each passing week our rookies were feeling more confident in holding speeches, and very well written speeches at that. The conference workshop also seems to have gone well, with many rookies highly considering joining the upcoming conference in Bonn, Germany. With a strong start to the semester, I can only imagine what our members will bring to the table in the upcoming topic blocks. I look forward to the last weekly session of this topic block, and I hope to see a strong resolution pass.

Scavenger Hunt

Last week we met up for the Scavenger Hunt. 6 teams took the challenge upon them and explored the city center. The team spirit showed by everyone was amazing. At the end we all met up at Cabaret Voltaire to share the experience with each other and have some nice drinks and chats. All in all the Scavenger Hunt 2022 was a success.

A big shoutout to Patricia and Anna who both organized this event with me.

RhodesMRC 2022

Distinguished Delegates,

The Team attended the RhodesMRC 2022 conference as the first conference of this academic year! I had the pleasure to bring 8 other delegates with me to Greece and experience the sunshine and warm weather once again even in autumn!

Upon our arrival, we explored the old town of Rhodes and its old medieval structures. It is a well-known fact that the Medieval City of Rhodes was named a UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1988. From the Palace of the Grand Master, where we had our opening ceremony, to the Archeological Museum, where our delegates were more than happy to share their extensive knowledge on the devoted Greek art, we were able to explore most parts of the Medieval Old Town. We also made our way to the Anthony Quinn Bay where we enjoyed an hour or two in the sun and got to experience the beautiful beaches of Greece.

The conference commenced on Wednesday with the opening ceremony and a speech by the Ambassador Hatem Atallah, a Tunisian diplomat, former Executive Director of the Anna Lindh Foundation and Vice-President of the Governing Board of the Euro-Med University (EMUNI), alongside other very honourable positions. We had the honour to speak to him and discuss about his experience as a diplomat, his favourite, and least favourite, speeches that he has heard throughout his career and some of his views on the world and society.

Last but not least, it is worth mentioning that we enjoyed the culinary aspect of the trip far too much. With at least three greek salads, saganaki and souvlaki at every meal, and everyone being a very big fan of tzatziki as well, we tried to enjoy traditional food as much as possible.

In conclusion, we are very delighted to have been able to attend the conference and participated in RhodesMRC 2022. We hope that some of our delegates consider going to the conference next year!

UNYA Updates

Dear MUN Team UZH

As the newly elected president of UNYA (United Nations Youth Association Switzerland), I wanted to give you a quick update on where we stand and what‘s to come. Over the last year the UNYA Board has been hard at work at recreating and restabilizing UNYA as a viable coordination organ between the different swiss MUN societies. This has been done partially by providing a space for the exchange of ideas and information, like for example the monthly best practice calls. And partially through events such as the geneva trialogue or the UNYA/FriMUN Conference which brought members from almost all swiss MUN societies together. In the coming year UNYA looks forward to continuing these practices as well as expand on them, so hopefully this isn‘t the last you‘ll hear of us this year ;)

We also want to congratulate Jenny Angst on being elected to the UNYA board and hope she continues the great work she has done on the MUN Team UZH board.

Presidential greetings,
Amin A. Tlili
