Newsletter April 2023

Distinguished Delegates,

In this short but sweet newsletter you will learn more about our first-ever Easter party and our current topic block. Enjoy!

General Assembly Announcement

Our General Assembly will take place on Saturday, 27 May 2023. We are looking forward to celebrating the past year with all of you! We will look back at all the conferences attended, the topics debated at our weekly sessions and the events we hosted this year. A new board for the academic year 2023/24 will be elected as well!

An official invitation with the agenda and a sign-up link will follow soon.

- August Norup, President

Second Topic Block and Guest Speaker Event
Safety of Journalists and the Protection of Whistleblowers

This topic block our delegates were tasked with discussing the safety of journalists and treatment of whistleblowers. We had the pleasure of starting this topic block off with a guest speaker. Bettina Büsser who is a representative of journalists without borders provided our members with a fascinating insight on the dangers that journalists face on daily a basis. Frau Büsser presented our members with an interesting question regarding the European Union’s decision to censor Russian broadcasting stations.

The first two topic blocks have gone by exceedingly well, with delegates giving passionate speeches to protect the lives of journalists and protect the rights of whistleblowers. The interesting dynamic of whistleblowers in the private and public sector was also brought up many times. I am looking forward to the final session of this topic block to see what resolution our members will pass.

The Easter Bunny has visited MUN Team UZH!

The MUN Team UZH has organised the first Easter Party of its history on the 6th of April 2023! This bright event was hosted by the Association’s Board at the MUN Office.

More than 45 guests gathered to celebrate Easter, eat some chocolate and engage in friendly exchange with students and lecturers of all University Faculties.

Two attractions ensured that everyone had a most fun experience. The first, an Egg-Hunt, made a couple of delegates move around our building (and its gardens) for some time until they found all 5 hidden Easter Eggs. Those had been placed previously in spots difficult to access.

The second activity of the night was an open karaoke. It invited each association member to perform at least once, singing out loud a song of their preference. The room witnessed all genres starting at German Rap, passing by Reggaeton all the way until “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams”. Moritz Adam, one of the delegates who dominated the stage for a couple of minutes, commented on our party:

"Drinks, music and good company can be the ingredients for a fun evening, and the society's Easter party did certainly deliver in this respect. After a busy first half of the spring semester, it was a very welcome opportunity to unwind and share a beer, the stage or a conversation with friends for a few hours. Many thanks to our Head of Events, for all his efforts in organising this!"

Yours Sincerely,

- Humberto Tomé, Head of Fundraising and Events

Cyberbullying, Callspoofing & Parents as Spies

Our partner the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Foundation Switzerland has invited our team to the event "Cyberbullying, Callspoofing & Eltern als Spione". The event will take place on 16th of May 2023, from 18.15-19.30h in room RAI-F-041 at Rämistrasse 74, Zurich. Admission is free of charge. For more information, visit https://www.menschenrechte.uzh.ch/de/Veranstaltungen/Veranstaltungen-FS_23.html and register for the event.

Even though the so-called "Generation Z" also known as "digital natives" use electronic and interactive media as part of their daily lives, it is them who are affected by virtual attacks; both as perpetrators and victims of "cyberbullying", "sexting", "grooming" and much more.

Although parents want to ensure the safety of their children: How far are they allowed to invade their children's privacy? And with what consequences? Smartwatches with GPS tracking, for example, are considered as means of ensuring the safety of children and young people, but they also offer enormous potential for abuse.

This event is intended to show how the personal rights of children are partly undermined in the digitalised everyday life of families, while parents and children at the same time become victims of a false idea of security. In addition, it will be presented what crime and violence prevention by the police looks like in practice and what those affected can do.

We look forward to seeing all of you at ZuMUN 2023 - it’s going to be great! Stay tuned!

See you soon,
Your Board
